Media AfricalandGrabs @Stop Africa Land Grabs: Great move by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC is standing against environmental crimes linked to environmental destruction, the illegal exploitation of natural resources and unlawful dispossession of land in a move hailed by land rights activists. http://www.reuters.com/a...

Media AfricalandGrabs @Stop Africa Land Grabs: Kudos Nigeria!! Land grabbing refers to land acquisitions by transnational corporations, business enterprises, private investors, and foreign governments through sale or lease contracts – some of which are for up to 99 years - which are highly detrimental to the interests of local communities. Media AfricalandGrabs @Stop Africa Land Grabs: When it comes to ensuring good land governance, it is essential that the kind of institutions in place are strong, adequate and effective. Group Profile

Land grabbing is the contentious issue of large-scale land acquisitions: the buying or leasing of large pieces of land in developing countries, by domestic and transnational companies, governments, and individuals. While used broadly throughout history, land grabbing as used today primarily refers to large-scale land acquisitions following the 2007-2008 world food price crisis. Obtaining water resources is usually critical to the land acquisitions, so it has also led to an associated trend of water grabbing.
